There’s been a big difference between what I carry in my baby diaper bag and what I carry in my toddler diaper bag and today I’m here to share those items with you! I don’t mean to brag but I feel like I have mastered the diaper bag now that P is a toddler. I seem to know what she needs and what’s not really necessary to carry! Today, I’m here to leave links and suggestions on what to carry in your diaper bag if you’ve got a toddler!
My diaper bag was gifted by my friend Tiffany for our baby shower! It was one of my top requested items on my baby registry… I think you’ll soon see why! With 19,000 ratings and a full 5 stars in reviews, it’s no wonder this diaper backpack diaper backpack is AMAZING!
So I want to break the items inside into a few important categories: diapers, food, and miscellaneous. I’ve found that these are the 3 general areas I always find myself filling when I need to use my diaper bag. Here’s what I typically pack:
I personally like to carry two different kinds of changing pads because I find that the changing tables in the bathrooms are super hard (and sometimes dirty), so any extra layer of cushioning to make my baby more comfortable is good for me! Plus, I’ve gone through moments where my fidgeting toddler gets poop on the disposable changing pad and I am so grateful that I get to just throw it away instead of frantically trying to wipe the poop off of my regular changing pad and placing it right back in my diaper bag.
The ziplock bags are for whoopsie mistakes. Sometimes Penelope will pee through her diaper, or sometimes she’ll make some sort of mess all over her clothes. I can put the dirty ones in a ziplock bag so I have easy access to it when I get home!
Get snacks that you KNOW your little one likes. Something quick and easy! I like to keep a pouch on us at all times for quick and refreshing on the go calories! I like to keep her snack pouches cold by placing them in the insulated compartment where bottles typically would go. A just-in-case microwaveable meal is a must for us because sometimes you just never know where you’ll be and I’d rather give my toddler something healthier than fast food on the road.
We’re also big foodies and like to bring our baby with us to restaurants! Pandemic or not, I just don’t fully trust the cleanliness of some tables we sit at (I used to work in restaurants… you can’t trust everyone). Bringing my own food mat lets me place her snacks and meal right in front of her so she can pick as she pleases. A bib is also helpful to catch as much mess as you can. I like these because they are easy to fold and washable! Oh! And those ziplock backs come in handy here too because once she’s done eating, you can throw the mat in bib in the dirty bag to bring home too!
A favorite toy is helpful to keep your little one distracted during diaper changes or really any time you want them to settle down a little more. But let’s face it, I always wind up giving her my phone at some point or another! I recently added first aid items to the bag when P started walking! She walks FAST and naturally stumbles when she gets too excited! We’ve gotten our share of boo boos and having bandaids and other items to clean up scrapes REALLY gives us peace of mind when it comes to avoiding infections (and blood).
SUNSCREEN is also a staple in our bag now that we’ve learned P is an outdoorsy girl. She LOVES to play outside and if it were up to her, she’d be outside all day! So I’ve tried to make it a habit to apply sunscreen before heading out in the sun. And depending on how long or what time of day we’re outside, bug spray comes in handy too!
If you’re like me and prefer to only keep one bag on rather than hauling both a diaper backpack and a purse, you’ll keep your necessities all in one place! Tampons, facemasks, hair ties, wallet and keys. That’s really all I need! So keeping it conveniently in my diaper bag makes traveling with my toddler less stressful because all I need to do is grab the diaper bag and go!
A few other helpful notes:
I know that this particular diaper backpack has a ton of useful compartments, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I have to fill them all. The more I stuff, the heavier and bulkier the bag gets. Not to mention it makes it more difficult to find the items you are looking for with all of the shuffling around in there. I also like to leave one or two compartments empty because you never know if you’ll be stuffing the bag with other randoms your toddler wants you to hold throughout the day.
Whatever you add to your bag, try to make it as small and easily portable as possible! My food mat is super foldable making it compact and simple to carry. I’ve got travel sizes of as much as I possibly can! If I can find an even smaller sound machine, I’ll swap that out, too! The smaller the better, the lighter the better!
