Looking for the best ways to protect your curls this Summer from the damaging effects of the pool, beach and the sun? Look no further! Here are the top 5 Summer Hair Care Tips to keep your curls in their best shape this VERY HOT season!
#1 – Deep Condition Your Hair The Night Before
Did you know that the sun in the sky and the chlorine from the pool are going to break down the protein in your hair? Don’t go thinking that the water from the beach is safer, because it’s not! The salt will actually dry out those curls! A good deep conditioner will keep your curls thoroughly moisturized and prepped for the sun and water it will be exposed to that very next day. A little extra tip, add some Jamaican Black Castor Oil to your deep conditioner to really help strengthen your hair.
#2 – Protective Styles
Whether you decide to get in the water or not, wear a protective style. Just make sure it isn’t tight enough to rip your hair. You really want to keep your curls protected as much as possible. Keeping your ends hidden is key because that’s the oldest part of your hair meaning its potentially weaker than the rest of your hair. Your crown is just as fragile and you could find breaks in the middle of the hair from your hair tie if your style is too tight. That, plus direct exposure to the sun and your curls could be in danger! Go for a loose bun or braids, think like pig tail braids or french braid. A hat is always my favorite option!
#3 – UV Protectant
If any part of your hair is going to be exposed, spray it with a UV protectant spray. I like the Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer that you can get at UltaBeauty in stores or online. This is great at protecting your curls from harsh UVA and UVB rays. I like to use it as a primer before getting into the water, too. It does have silicones in it so it will coat your hair, protecting it from allowing your curls to soak up anything you DON’T want in your hair. It maintains moisture without weighing your curls down, making your hairstyles last longer. It does a great job at taming flyaways and in general, it’s a great detangler which less breakage! I’m in love with this product!
#4 – Rinse With Tap Water Before Getting In The Water
If you decide to get into the pool or beach water, make sure to rinse your hair with tap water first. Don’t forget, the dryer your hair is, the more it’s going to want to suck up any moisture it comes into contact with and you certainly don’t want it to suck up chlorinated pool water. And note, Salt water will actually dry on the hair and create a high saline solution which will build up and make your hair feel dryer and make it harder to manage. If the water you are rinsing your hair with is cold, even better! That’ll help seal and tighten the cuticle!
#5 – Co-wash Your Hair
Clarifying is important, let me cover that first. You’ve got the chlorine from the pool on your scalp and hair, if you swim in the ocean… there’s saltwater buildup, if you’re protecting your hair with a uv spray, diluted sunscreen or even raw shea butter, that’ll also buildup. So cleansing your scalp is important so you’re not clogging your follicles or weighing your hair down. You can cleanse your scalp using a silicone free conditioner!
