Top Winter Hair Care Tips For Curls

The weather outside is frightful, so it is time to take extra care of our curls. Not sure if you were aware or not, but with the change of the seasons, there should also be a change in your hair care routine and maybe even your products! Here are my top Winter hair care tips for curls.

  1. Make deep conditioning your best friend – Find a deep conditioner that you love, one that is truly moisturizing to keep your hair from being dry and brittle in the colder months. One of my personal favorites is the SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque. Try to Deep Condition at least once a week for 30-45 minutes under a heat cap for intense moisture!
  2. LOW or NO heat – I get it, when it’s colder out we want our hair to dry faster! Try to avoid adding heat through blowdryers and especially flat irons. Air dry if you can! After styling, scrunch curls with a cotton t-shirt as gently but also as often as possible to dry your hair faster. If you absolutely must use a blow dryer with diffuser, go LOW HEAT at a low blow setting!
  3. Satin or Silk for the Win! – Beanies and chunky knit sweaters might look cute, but will make your hair frizzy and possibly create breakage! If you can, opt for beanies lined with satin or silk! If you’re wearing a knit sweater, opt for updos to keep your hair out of your clothes!
  4. Rinse With Cool Water – This one is TOUGH! Especially when it’s freezing outside! Honestly, the first thing I want to do is walk in boiling hot water to keep warm. But that hotter the water, the higher the changes of it frying your hair. Trust me, I’ve had to learn this lesson the hard way! Try not to have hot water hit your hair. Opt for hair washing with warm water and when you are done, do a final rinse with cool water to seal the cuticles of your hair!
  5. Avoid Products with Humectants – While these products should be staples in your routine during the hotter months, they can give the opposite effect in the colder months. With colder air, humectants draw moisture OUT of your hair, making it drier. With drier hair, you have a higher chance of split ends, flyaways and breakage!
  6. Stay Hydrated – This may be a tip some look over but it’s always important to stay hydrated for healthier skin and hair. Typically in the colder months, there’s more hot chocolate, and more coffee. Just be sure to follow up with water!!!
